On view January 19 - April 1

Every subject in these pieces does indeed belong in rock and roll. Their eyes let you know it. And that’s what this show is about: the female gaze through the noise and fun of rock and roll.

For inspiration I listened to nothing but 80’s music with sex appeal like Love & Rockets, Joan Jett, INXS, Eurythmics, etc. I re-watched films like “Body Double” and “Working Girl”, and I looked through my collection of late 60’s French and Italian erotic comics for pop-art inspiration. Add acrylic and ink, take some liberties with perspective, show plenty of legs and teeth and you get some very happy, confident and sometimes nutty women in everything from power suits to full body lace. I’m thrilled to have these works adorn the wonderful walls of Shag.

“You Belong in Rock and Roll” is a song by David Bowie (well, technically Tin Machine), a minimal and slightly unsettling love song with some sexy saxophone towards the end. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate title for this collection of work.

Brett Wintle is an artist living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After receiving his BA in Illustration from the University of Hartford, he spent a short time in London working for The Erotic Print Society before settling into Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2001. The early 00’s were full of self- published comic books and contributing stories to the Meathaus Collective books. Losing interest in panel format, there were a couple years of hiatus finding an artistic voice again. This resulting in experiments in large-scale work in gouache and acrylic, incorporating elements of color from 60’s pop-art and classic fashion illustration. Since 2008 used this style in both group and solo gallery shows in the Brooklyn and Manhattan area; Many of the pieces were used for limited run silkscreen and giclee prints sold in small shops as well as online. Recently, the stark black and white aesthetic has made a return to the work.
